Create Canvas Training Course

In Canvas, organizations are no longer being used. What used to be organizations are now called "Canvas Training Courses" and the storage limit for each has been reduced from 2000 megabytes (2 GB) to 250 megabytes (250 MB). The best use case for these courses are for training purposes.

These courses work exactly the same way as a Banner created course with the exception of enrollments. It is the instructor's responsibility to enroll all of its students and maintain these enrollments. See the Adding Participants section below for more information on how to enroll users into your our Canvas Training Course.

Alternatively, there are a number of centrally-supported options available at VCU to support group collaboration. Prior to submitting a request for a Canvas training course, please review the linked options and consider if they would better meet your goals - Group Collaboration Options

Create a Canvas Training Course in Canvas

In order to better streamline the process, we have designed a Google Form that can be filled out to auto-generate an Organization shell within Canvas.

In the Canvas Canvas Training Course Request Form there are 2 options to be aware of:

1. Enable self-enrollment allows users to put themselves into the training course at will.

2. Allow Public Index Visibility allows people to find the training course in the “All Courses” -> “Browse More Courses” area of the Canvas dashboard.

Adding Participants

Once the training course has been created, it is the instructor's responsibility to enroll all of its members and maintain these enrollments. This can be done by following the Manually Add Users to a Course instructions.

Note: Students cannot create training courses, and must have a VCU faculty or staff member sponsor the course. The sponsor must fill out the Canvas Training Course Request Form (linked above) and then manually add the student to the course as a Teacher.
